Beginning of the end
The recent series played between South Africa and Australia has given birth to a new champion. For last two decades Australia has sustained its dominance in both forms of the game and fashioned so many great players. Despite the change of captains Aussies ensured that they are the influential in the game of cricket. Allan Border, Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, under the captaincy of these players Australia unruffled lots of victories including four world cup victories in its bucket. Especially in the last two world cups Australia didn’t loose even a single match.
Australia’s series defeat with a margin of 4-1 against South Africa is really wearisome for their management including the captain Ricky Ponting. The way South African bowlers dismantled Australian top order in almost every match is simply a very rare thing to happen. Australia had attempted so many opening amalgamations but nothing seemed work for them. Just a year back Australia had got the best opening pair in both tests and one days. They never faced problem as the pair of Mathew Heyden/ Justin Langer in tests and Heyden/Gilchrist in one days infrequently fail. Remember Heyden was the leading runs scorer of World Cup 2007 and Adam Gilchrist scored marvelous 149 runs in the rain affected final of World Cup 2007. But the problem started for the Australia when they left the cricket in a year’s time. Everything changed out of the blue. Now they don’t have the services of Heyden and Gilchrist on opening slot, Demian Martin and Andrew Symonds in the middle order. Mike Hussey is also struggling consistently with the bat in both versions of the game.
Similary in the bowling department they are unable to fill the gap created with the demise of Shane Warne, Glen McGrath, Jeson Gillespi and Damien Fleeming. Current pace battery of Australia is talented but most of them are pretty inexperienced so the usually are found at the receiving end.
Most of the cricket analysts say that it was pretty much on the cards. The growing age of Australian players has been a huge concern for the management and the way they retired in succession had produced bad impacts on Australia.
In my opinion Australia will need enough time to regain its invincible stint. It will not happen in days not in weeks not in even in months instead it will take few years to them.
